"Kindness is part of our nature"

The Straits Times, A23, 7 April 2015

The writer stated that Mr Lee Kuan Yew, brought together a nation at his death, as he did in his lifetime. Amid the grief, there were innumerable acts of kindness. The writer felt that kindness must have been a part of our nature and did not suddenly arise only during certain times.

The writer wrote, "Kindness does not discriminate between occasions. Kindness simply is. And we should simply celebrate whenever manifested." I agree with him. I feel that kindness can be found  everywhere, and does not arise only at particular situations.

To me, being kind means lending a helping hand to others in need. If the need arises, we should help others without hesitation. According to a survey, Singapore is one of the world's unhappiest countries. With kindness inherent in our society, this proves that us Singaporeans are not as unhappy and apathetic as we are made out to be.

In conclusion, I am heartened that so much selflessness was being demonstrated. This occasion has helped to unite the nation and bring out the kindness in people. Since people were able to express kindness so easily, this means that kindness is part of our nature. Thus, we should be proud of ourselves and continue to be kind to one another, regardless of any situation.

  1. I agree with your point of view. I feel that even though we have been named one of the unhappiest and coldest countries, we will always lend a helping hand to those in need, as we are, after all, fellow Singaporeans, fellow people, humans, who live in the same country.

  2. I agree with what you have said. Singaporeans may be thought of as unhelpful and unhappy, but if you see from a different point Singaporeans do help others by doing little things that might not be noticed. And, it's these little things that make us happy. I think we should continue helping other people, so that Singapore will be even happier.

  3. I agree with your point of view . Mr Lee Kuan Yew left the country with great kindness of his . Kindness is something that all of us have in our heart , either received from others , or ready to be given out . I feel that if we take up the courage of doing what we really want , like helping those in need even if we might face certain criticizes or judging , Singapore will not be named as one of the unhappiest and coldest countries anymore . Kindness indead doesnt arise only at particular situations , as mentioned by Andrea . Kindness can be shown through very little things too . If someone showed kindness to me , I have the responsibility to pass it on to other people around me , and make Singapore a warmer country

  4. I agree with your point of view. Mr Lee's greatest wish is for Singapore to be untied as a nation and lend each other a helping hand in times of need. His passing has proved that Singapore is united and that we show kindness to each and everyone around us. Samaritans started giving out water, breakfast, and even umbrella lending to those who are in the queue to pay their last respects for Mr Lee. This has shown that Singaporeans do indeed show kindness to people around us.

  5. I agree with your point of view. Though Singapore may be seen as one of the most unhappy countries, but that does not mean we do not help each other. We all have kindness in our hearts; it's the little gestures of kindness that bring us together. We should not be ashamed of being kind to one another, instead we should do it more often

  6. It is a fact that Singaporeans make good donations to those in need. We also see little acts of kindness around us. In general, I think SIngaporeans are rather reserved and do not like to call attention to themselves when they extend some help to others. One would need to examine the methodology of the survey carried out and the methods of measurement employed. Did it take into consideration the different ways in which happiness or kindness are expressed in different cultures?

  7. I agree vehemently with your point of view. Even though Singapore is a first-world country, it is evident that Singaporeans are rather 'cold-hearted' people. Some do not even do simple things like give their seats up to those who need it more on the Mass Rapid Transport. However, there are still others who do their best to extend their help to others. Some will not hesitate to go up to someone when they notice that they are in need of help in, for example, carrying shopping bags. These are the little things that make your heart flutter when witnessed. In addition, to the point about Singapore being an unhappy country, I feel that not all Singaporeans are unhappy, just some ungrateful ones are. Ergo, we must always stay grateful to our forefathers for building our country up, lest we may not feel satisfied with the wonderful country that we are living in, which would not be where it is today if not for their hard work and perseverance.
